1454 longer to eat their first meal than controls did and then, for the next 6 hours, ate less at each meal. As the team reported in September in the American Journal of Physiology, monkeys receiving the peptide also held food in their stomachs longer than controls did, which may explain, in part, why subsequent appetite diminished. Still, Tschoëp and Moran point out, and Bloom concedes, no study, except the original 2002 paper, demonstrates loss of body fat or body weight, the ultimate goal for an antiobesity drug. For example, in Moran’s study, PYY3-36 completely lost its efficacy after the first day of injection. And Reidelberger never measured animals’ weights because of experimental design: Each animal ultimately received each of all six doses of PYY3-36 in random order and would have weighed the same at the end of the experiment. Thus, for now, PYY3-36 would seem far too fickle to make a decent antiobesity drug. “Our data suggest that PYY3-36 does do something to feeding,” Moran concedes. “But we still have a lot to learn.” –TRISHA GURA

The Value of Residential Land and Structures during the Great Housing Boom and Bust*
This study examines how the value of residential land and structures evolved during the great housing boom and bust using data on more than a million residential properties that were sold in ten metropolitan areas between 1998 and 2009. We use a hedonic estimator to disentangle the market value of land and structures at a local (census tract) level. Our estimates reveal substantial heterogeneit...
متن کاملBoom-Bust Cycles: Leveraging, Complex Securities, and Asset Prices
Recent history suggests that many boom-bust cycles are naturally driven by linkages between the credit market and asset prices. Additionally, new structured securities have been developed, e.g., MBS, CDOs, and CDS, which have acted as instruments of risk transfer. We show that there is a certain non-robustness in the pricing of these instruments and we create a model in which their role in the ...
